Where had the week gone? It seemed like every day just passed in a blur of twisted gut and anxiety, punctuated by an alternating roller coaster of rage and calm. In the days since Tash’s party she’d made sure she was busy, had thrown herself into organising the details for the upcoming events: the Inverness spectacle and HHP, office shorthand for Her Husband’s Proposal.

Contact with Cam had been minimal. At the weekend, she’d called Cara’s number on the pretence of wanting to discuss some details with her. No answer. However, the message on her mobile phone had said she was away for a few days. Did that mean that Cam was with her? Was he genuinely in London or was he raving his loafers off in a nightclub in Ibiza? Or holed up in a beach house somewhere on the south coast? The thought of him doing his favourite things without her made her want to weep.

She picked up the phone again and dialled Cara’s number by heart. Still no answer. Desperation rising, she fired off an email.

Hi Cara,

Have some details to discuss. Can you call me please?

Kind regards,

Laney Cochrane

Personal Proposals.

The email had only been gone for a couple of minutes when a reply pinged.

Hey Laney,

Sorry, in Marbella on a shoot. Photographer like, totally demanding. Will be back tomorrow. Will call ya! Cxx

Tomorrow. The same day that Cam was returning. The same day she was leaving for Inverness, her stay there brought forward a day by the utter conviction that she couldn’t be in the same room as Cam without blurting out everything. And she’d gone too far now to back out. Flights were booked, hotels were reserved, dinner reservations made, petals ordered, butler sourced and musicians researched. The fireworks were proving to be an issue, but Laney was fairly sure they would be provided on the night – although not necessarily in the form of pretty lights and starbursts.

A question plagued her sleep and many of the conversations she’d had with Tash and Millie since she’d decided to go through with this. What was she going to do if it all played out according to Cara’s vision? How was she going to react at the moment of truth? What would she say, what would she do, would she end up in jail and could they rustle up the bail money between them?

Laney had no answers. The plan was to stay cool, walk away with dignity, her head held high. It was a good plan. Great. And she could do that. Definitely.

Her cursor flickered over the “close” button on Cara’s email when she realised she hadn’t read it all.

PS: Just noticed you have the same surname as my honey. Like, total coincidence!

Laney slammed down the mug she was holding in her other hand so violently that tea splashed everywhere.

Oh, how she wanted to type: “It’s not a coincidence, you daft tart – the symbiotic nature of our surnames is due to the fact that I’M MARRIED TO THE UNFAITHFUL FUCKER.”
